Iberdrola continues to expand its presence in the renewable energy sector in Germany with its first photovoltaic system.
The new project named Boldekow has a total output of around 56MWp will be built in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
Boldekow will have 80,000 bifacial solar modules and generate 50GWh of green electricity.
Modules of this type use both direct radiation on the front and indirect light on the back to generate electricity.
The project will avoid emitting 20,000 tonnes of CO2 per year once it starts commercial operations in late 2024.
During the construction and operating period, Boldekow will create local jobs and is expected to pay over €5m in property taxes over a 30-year period.
Iberdrola Germany chief executive Felipe Montero said: “In recent years we have successfully developed our offshore area in Germany, expanded our offshore wind projects and pushed ahead with further planning.
“The extent of the forthcoming decarbonization is an additional motivation for us to set up our growth and investment strategy in the onshore area in a future-oriented manner and to implement wind power and photovoltaic projects.
“We have therefore decided to accelerate our growth strategy in Germany and to increase our investments.
“The decision to invest in the PV plant in Boldekow, Iberdrola’s first plant of this type in Germany, is a very important moment for the group. We are confident that this plant will be followed by many more.
“I am very pleased that we are working with a long-standing partner and customer like Vodafone on this project and can thus take another step towards implementing the industrial energy transition in Germany.”
