French authorities have confirmed that the country’s second Mediterranean floating wind farm will be based in the Gulf of Fos, west of Marseille.
The decision marks the formal adoption of the preferred site over an alternative off the coast of Perpignan near the Spanish border.
The 250MW project will site between 10 and 20 wind turbines more than 22km from the coast. The development will be supplemented in the future by an extension of 500MW within the same area.
With the exact location of the park to be determined in the coming months, a call for tenders will be issued to a group of preselected candidates, who were chosen at the start of 2022.
These specifications will be submitted to the Energy Regulatory Commission this summer before being published. The winner will be designated by the Government in spring 2024.
The commissioning of the floating wind farm is planned for 2031.
