ABO Wind has unveiled its plans to develop a green hydrogen pilot project in Germany that will feature a wind turbine connected to an electrolyser.
The German Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport is providing €12m in funding for the project in Hünfeld-Michelsrombach, as part of the National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Innovation Programme.
The site will consist of a wind turbine with a direct connection to a 5MW electrolyser, located in the industrial park “Hessisches Kegelspiel” in Hünfeld.
The green hydrogen development includes a hydrogen refuelling station for lorries and buses.
The approval application for the 4.8MW wind turbine has already been submitted.
After five years of operation the electrolyser will be expanded to 7.5MW.
Around 50 lorries could be refuelled a day at the station and the project’s hydrogen can also be transported to distant customers by lorry in mobile storage units, so-called trailers.
The hydrogen project emerged from the HyExpert project “HyWheels”, which was launched in 2019 and aims to turn East Hesse into a pioneer region for a carbon-neutral logistics economy.
