UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will pledge to speed up the country’s adoption of renewable energy sources.
According to a Reuters report, he is set to make the announcement in a speech at the UN COP27 climate change summit.
During the address, he will pledge greater international cooperation accelerate the transition to clean energy sources. He will also urge business and government leaders to adhere to commitments made during the previous COP summit, which was hosted in Glasgow last year.
In addition, he will hold meetings on a variety of topics, including energy security, green technology and protecting the environment.
“We need to move further and faster to transition to renewable energy, and I will ensure the UK is at the forefront of this global movement as a clean energy superpower,” a pre-event statement from the Prime Minister read.
However, opposition Labour leader Keir Starmer accused Sunak of failing to show leadership on climate issues.
In an op-ed in the Guardian, he noted that, with the world faced with a worsening climate and increasing energy insecurity, “the solution to both of these calamities is adopting cheap, clean, homegrown power as fast as we can”.
