RenewableUK has said that Britain needs to build more clean energy projects more quickly in response to soaring gas prices.
Responding to Ofgem’s energy price cap announcement, which will see household bills rise by 80%, RenewableUK’s chief executive Dan McGrail (pictured) said: “Let’s be absolutely clear – the cause of this unaffordable increase in household bills is the cost of gas.
“So we urgently need to see a greater level of emergency support for consumers from the Government to get through the winter, and we need to switch to low-cost alternatives much faster.
“The latest round of renewable energy projects show that wind is the cheapest source of new power for the UK, generating home-grown electricity which is many times cheaper than the eye-watering cost of fossil fuels on the international market.
“So we need to get on with building bigger British clean energy projects faster to help ease the pain for consumers”.
Statkraft called for more investment in solar power in response to the price cap.
Managing director of Statkraft UK David Flood said: “Today’s price cap announcement will make energy bills simply unaffordable for millions across the UK.
“We need to consider an immediate fix for consumers, and we must do more to limit our reliance on fluctuating gas prices.
“We need to invest in renewables, particularly in solar power, which is the cheapest and quickest way to deploy renewable energy to Britain.
“This is something we need to start addressing now, putting action ahead of debate, for the sake of consumers.”
