PGE Group has secured a licence to build a 200MW battery storage project in Poland.
The licence, issued by the President of the Energy Regulatory Office, is the first to be approved in the country for a battery storage project.
It will be located at the 716MW pumped hydro Szczytowo-Pompowa Power Plant in Żarnowiec, creating an “innovative hybrid installation,” the company said.
PGE Group president Wojciech Dąbrowski added: “Our strategic goal in the area of energy storage is to have 800MW of new energy storage installations in Poland in 2030.
“The installations will ensure safe system integration of new renewable energy sources, contribute to the stabilisation of the power system and improve the energy security of the country.
“The Żarnowiec energy storage project is in line with the objectives of the European Green Deal in terms of better integration of electricity with renewable energy sources and limiting the use of high-emission conventional units.”
PGE is applying for subsidies from the European Commission for the battery project and is currently seeking business partners to finance the investment.
