The offshore wind industry is at an “inflection point”, meaning that a radical new way of doing business is needed to deliver a “global expansion at the pace and scale” needed to decarbonise power systems, attendees at GOW 2022 heard earlier today.
A scrapping of competitive auctions in favour of a fixed price for offshore wind power is among the measures that need to be examined, SSE Renewables offshore wind director Paul Cooley told the audience during the opening panel session.
Cooley also added that there are “tough decisions” to be made around the impact renewables buildout will have environmentally, versus the benefits of decarbonisation.
More on this can be found in today’s Global Offshore Wind 2022 special reNEWS show daily.
There is also a piece on how deeper co-operation across the UK offshore wind industry will be crucial to delivering the country’s 50GW by 2030 installation goals.
In this show daily, SSE Renewables offshore development director Maria Ryan also discusses the challenges around delivering one of the largest offshore wind pipelines in the UK and Ireland.
In this issue, Aker Offshore Wind’s UK managing director, along with representatives from Mainstream Renewables and Siemens Gamesa highlight some of the regulatory issues that could potentially impede the projected trajectory of offshore wind powered green hydrogen.
