RES targets solar surge with 1GW pipeline

RES has been awarded a contract that will see it continue to provide operations and maintenance (O&M) services for offshore transmission (OFTO) assets at the Walney 1 offshore wind farm.

The commitment to a new contract by Blue Transmission Walney 1 Ltd followed a competitive tendering process.

RES will provide scheduled and unscheduled maintenance of equipment, site management, logistics and control centre services.

RES has been involved in the offshore wind sector since its beginnings in the 1990s and already provides similar services for Blue Transmission Walney 2 Ltd.

As part of the new contract RES will continue to deliver all high voltage services for Walney 1 OFTO, including monitoring by RES’ control centre.

RES offshore wind head Robert Fradley said: “For the past five years we’ve been providing OFTO services for Blue Transmissions’ Walney 1 & 2.

In that time, we’ve worked closely with our client to deliver a high-quality service that focusses on availability which helps our client maximise the value of their asset.

“This contract renewal is validation of this approach.”

Blue Transmission director Gary Thornton added: “RES was selected due to their expertise in the offshore wind industry, including their knowledge of engineering, technical and operational matters. RES performed well delivering services for Walney 1 and 2 OFTO and we look forward to continuing this partnership.”

Walney 1 Offshore Wind Farm is located in the Irish Sea, off the Cumbrian coast, with the offshore substation platform located 15 km from the coast of Walney Island and 18km from Barrow-in-Furness.

The offshore substation is connected to the shore by a 45 km undersea cable, which comes ashore near Heysham. The onshore cables, which are about 3 km long, connect to the onshore substation at Heysham.

RES now delivers offshore O&M services to six OFTOs, comprising eight substations.
