Xlinks is in talks with the UK government about possible Contract for Difference (CfD) support for a project that would link power generated at a solar and wind facility with storage in Morocco to the UK.
Company chief executive Simon Morrish said: “We are not looking for government funding to assist with the cost of the project which presents an enormous opportunity, consistent with UK net zero commitments and with minimal risk.
“We are working with UK government to agree a CfD that would help bring down bills significantly.”
The Morocco–UK Power Project aims to cover an area of approximately 1500km-squared and connect 3800km HVDC subsea cables, said the company behind the plans Xlinks.
Xlinks is aiming to generate 10.5GW from the solar and wind to deliver 3.6GW of reliable energy for an average of 20-plus hours a day.
