Shell Brasil has applied for environmental permits for six offshore wind farms in Brazil totalling 17GW.
The projects will be located off the coasts of the states of Piaui, Ceara, Rio Grande do Norte, Espirito Santo, Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Sul.
Shell Brasil filed the Activity Characterisation Form (FCA) to the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Natural Resources (IBAMA).
It expects to start environmental studies later in 2022, pending further definition of the rules for offshore wind development in the country.
Shell Renewable Generation manager in Brazil Gabriela Oliveira said: “With more than 20 years of experience in wind energy in the world and more than 50 years of tradition in offshore projects, Shell intends to combine its expertise on these two fronts with the aim of providing more energy and clean energy to the country.”
