Prysmian has secured two contracts to supply subsea cable infrastructure for the 804MW Park City and the 1232MW Commonwealth Wind offshore wind farms in the US.
Both agreements, totalling approximately €799m, were awarded by Vineyard Wind which is a joint venture between Avangrid Renewables and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners.
The first cabling project, worth around €266m, will connect the Park City offshore wind farm to the electricity grid in Connecticut.
Prysmian said it will deploy HVAC 275 kV three-core cables with XLPE insulation and single wire armouring which will be produced at the company’s facilities Arco Felice in Italy and Pikkala in Finland.
It added that delivery and commissioning of the cables is scheduled for 2026 and will be installed by the Leonardo da Vinci and Ulisse vessels.
The second contract for the Commonwealth Wind cabling project is worth around €514m and requires Prysmian to design, supply, install, and commission as many as three export submarine power cable links to connect the wind farm to the electricity grid in Massachusetts.
The company will supply HVAC 275 kV three-core cables with XLPE insulation and single-wire armouring to be installed by the Leonardo da Vinci and Ulisse vessels.
Delivery and commissioning of these export cables is scheduled for 2027.
Prysmian said that it intends to manufacture these cables at a state-of-the-art facility for submarine transmission cables at Brayton Point, of which the company will build at the site of the former 1600MW coal-fired power plant in Somerset along the state coast.
The company added that the construction of this facility is subject to several customary conditions precedent, such as obtaining permits to build the facilities and closing the contractual arrangements with the property owner.
Prysmian’s award of the Commonwealth Wind contract follows the Massachusetts Baker-Polito administration selection of the Vineyard Wind’s proposal for delivering 1200 MW of offshore wind farm capacity.
Both cable supply awards are subject to the finalization of the company’s plans to localize its footprint, Prysmian said.
Prysmian Group executive vice president Hakan Ozmen said: “The renewed partnership with Avangrid confirms the validity of Prysmian’s growth ambition in the fast[1]developing offshore wind farm industry in the US.
“Prysmian is also excited to announce significant progress towards its first submarine power cables manufacturing facility in the US.
“While we still have work to do to finalise the agreement, it is clear that, with the support of the state of Massachusetts and others, we are in a great position to reach a final agreement that will prompt a major expansion of our Company.”
