Enel Green Power has brought online the 353MW Morro do Chapéu Sul 2 onshore wind farm in Brazil.
The project, located in the municipalities of Morro do Chapéu and Capernaum, is composed of 84 turbines, of which roughly half have already been connected to the National Interconnected System.
It is expected to be fully operational by January when it will then be able to generate more than 1800GWh of energy per year and avoid annual emissions of around 992,000 tons of CO2.
Enel said that the construction of the wind farm required an investment of approximately €304m and added that the energy that it produces will mostly be supplied to the free market for sale to commercial customers.
The project is located in the same region as its sister project the 172MW Morro do Chapéu Sul which has been in operation since 2018.
Enel Green Power Brazil head Roberta Bonomi said: “The start of operations in Morro do Chapéu Sul II reaffirms our commitment to contribute to the diversification of renewable sources in the country, making available to the electricity system a substantial volume of new installed capacity capable of helping the country in view of the current water shortage.
“This is Enel’s fourth renewable project to come into operation in the country in 2021.
“Between 2020 and early 2022 alone, we will have put into operation around 2.6 GW of new wind and solar capacity, contributing to our sustainable growth in the region.”
Enel currently has another three projects, two wind farms and one solar, in the final stages of construction in Brazil, including the expansion works of the 716MW Lagoa dos Ventos wind farm and the 864MW Sao Goncalo solar park both located in Piauí.
