The would-be new German government is planning a major expansion of renewables.
The Social Democrat, Green, Free Democrats coalition outlined its plans in a draft administration agreement.
The blueprint said two percent of the land area is to be designated for onshore wind power.
“We want to ensure that the municipalities benefit financially from wind turbines and larger open-space solar systems in their area,” it added.
Meanwhile, the parties said they “will significantly increase capacities for offshore wind energy”.
The partners also want to accelerate the exit from coal power, bringing forward a deadline eight years to 2030.
The SPD’s Olaf Scholz (pictured), who is widely expected to become the new chancellor in the coalition, said the measures will result in “probably Germany’s biggest industrial modernisation for more than a century”.
It will need the approval of party members before more in-depth coalition talks get underway, it is understood.
The parties have been exploring a coalition since an election last month.
