Sulmara Subsea is investing in two iXblue DriX unmanned surface vessel (USV) systems from Unique Group.
Design features of the USV include a hydrodynamic monohull and drop keel to provide stability and balance and speed capabilities of up to 14 knots.
DriX can sail for seven days at seven knots, more than 10 days at four knots, Sulmara said.
The first system has already been delivered to Plymouth Smart Sound facility this month and delivery of the second DriX is scheduled for October.
The initial commitment is for 12 months with options to extend and a third system also planned for the first quarter of 2022.
Sulmara Subsea chief executive Kevin McBarron said: “By investing in these USVs we are visibly demonstrating that business growth and prioritising environmental decision making need not be incompatible.
“From its inception our company ethos has been one of innovation aligned with a lower-carbon footprint compared to traditional methods of offshore services delivery.
“Our strategy is proving that the two are able to successfully co-exist whilst keeping costs under control, adding value and producing strong results for our growing client base.”
