Renewables newbie Xlinks is planning to link power generated at a solar and wind facility with storage in Morocco to the UK.
The Morocco–UK Power Project aims to cover an area of approximately 1500km-squared and connect 3800km HVDC subsea cables, said the company behind the plans Xlinks.
Xlinks said it is “making progress” in gaining the regulatory and government approvals in Morocco.
It aims to generate a total of 3.6GW of energy from the North African country’s Guelmim Oued Noun region to the UK.
The interconnector route will be laid in waters skirting the coasts of Portugal, Spain and France before linking to UK via two 1.8GW connections at Alverdiscott in Devon.
Xlinks said it also plans a cable manufacturing industry in the UK, adding that agreements for factories to be located in Hunterston and Port Talbot have been signed with planning permission applications underway.
Discussions are also taking place for a third factory in the north-east of England, it said.
