Wind Denmark has launched a set of proposals to boost wind and solar in order for the country to become self-sufficient in renewable energy by 2030.
The trade association estimates the country needs to grow its installed wind and solar capacity 3-4 times what it is today over the decade to deliver on its climate objective and also leverage opportunities to exporter of green energy and power-to-x products.
Current policies are not sufficient to achieve these aims, the organisation stated.
“The good news is that Denmark has an opportunity to help Europe reach its climate goals not only with wind and solar, but also to contribute to Europe achieving climate goals while achieving a number of business gains from a potential green export adventure.
“The bad news is that we are on course to neither be able to meet our own climate goals nor meet the business ambitions for Denmark if we do not get a political plan for a significant green gear change,” says Wind Denmark’s Jan Hylleberg.
He said an action plan for green power needs to be in place within the next 12 months if the wind turbines are to be ready by 2030.
He added: “We will not get there if we only bet on wind turbines far out at sea, as the energy islands are the expression of.”
Wind Denmark stated that almost all known offshore wind projects, state as well as private, need to be realised by 2030.
At the same time, further offshore wind is needed if the ambitions for the production of green power-to-x fuels are to be realised.
“We are not saying that the state should build offshore wind farms, as it is still uncertain whether we will need them.
“Instead, we call for market players to be able to provide their own support-free renewable energy projects.
“In other words, market-driven offshore wind development should play a role in complementing government tenders,” Hylleberg said.
Wind Denmark has already recommended that politicians should revisit the content of the summer 2021 offshore wind reform, which takes state control of the pace of expansion and stops the possibility of market-driven offshore wind development at distances more than 15 km from land.
Wind Denmark is launching a total of 30 proposals at Vindtraef 2021, where other players will also make suggestions on what needs to be done in order for Denmark to expand renewable energy capacity by 2030.
