Norwegian energy company Statkraft has unveiled plans to build its first wind farms in Chile, comprising the three-project 102MW Torsa complex.
Construction at Torsa, which will feature 19 Nordex N163/5.X machines, will start in the second half of this year.
The three wind farms are called Cardonal, Manantiales and Los Cerillos and will be completed in October, November and December next year.
They are located in the northern part of the O’Higgins region, 124km south of Santiago.
In total, the wind farms are expected to produce more than 300 gigawatt-hours of electricity a year.
Statkraft executive vice president of international power Jurgen Tzschoppe said: “These three wind farms are not only expanding our generating capacity in Chile; it is broadening our renewable energy portfolio by including wind power for the first time.
“Going forward, we’re also planning to include solar power into our generation mix.
“The South American nation is an attractive market for Statkraft and we want to capitalise on our combined expertise in power generation and market operations to best serve the market and provide energy to large industrial customers in the country.”
Statkraft has been present in Chile since 2014 and currently owns a production capacity of 209MW made up of hydro power assets.
