Organisations including Repsol and Petronor are part of a consortium participating in a €1300m hydrogen project in the Basque region of the Spain.
The Basque Hydrogen Corridor will see €650m invested in three green hydrogen projects totalling 112MW.
The first one built by Petronor, which will be operational in 2022, will have 2MW of capacity and will serve to power the Abanto Technology Park.
A second 10MW project will be developed by Petronor, EVE and Enagas and will come online in 2024 at the Port of Bilbao.
Production will be destined for a synthetic fuels plant.
Thirdly, a 100MW facility is due for completion in 2025 and will serve to decarbonise the production process of Petronor as well as supply the needs of the corridor itself.
In addition, a biogas manufacturing plant will be installed that will produce hydrogen from solid urban waste.
The corridor will comprise a total of 34 projects, which also include an electrolyzer factory, fuel cell development and a hydrogenerator to supply hydrogen for buses and trains.
A total of 78 organisations are involved in the corridor project, made up of eight institutions, 12 knowledge centres and business associations and 58 companies.
About €250m will be spent to bring the necessary technological and industrial development to maturity throughout the value chain, as well as the development of the industrial digitisation processes that are needed.
A further €50m will be allocated to research projects related to the applications of hydrogen in mobility.
The consortium said the corridor will create 1340 direct and 6700 indirect jobs by 2026.
