Engie commissioned 3GW of renewable capacity in 2020, including just under 2GW in the US, the company has revealed.
This included some1.8 GW in North America, about 0.9GW in Europe and approximately 0.3GW in Latin America and the rest of the world.
The French energy provider says it remains on target to commission 9GW of renewable capacity between 2019 and 2021.
Of the 3GW commissioned in 2020, 70% was onshore wind, 21% solar photovoltaic and, for the first time, around 9% offshore wind.
The latter figure included the commissioning of the first unit of the fixed offshore wind farm in Belgium, the 235MW Seamade Mermaid.
These new assets can provide enough renewable energy to power 1.3 million homes over a 12-month period.
The Group also acquired 2GW of assets in operation in Europe.
This comprised 1.7GW of hydroelectric power in Portugal and 0.3GW of onshore wind in Italy and France.
At the end of 2020, Engie was operating 31GW of renewable assets, an increase of 5GW compared to the end of 2019.
Engie also signed more than 1.5GW of PPAs in 2020.
Overall renewable portfolio consists of ~57% hydropower capacity and ~43% wind and solar assets.
Renewable capacities now represent 30% of ENGIE’s total electricity production capacity at 101 GW.
Engie managing director Catherine MacGregor said: “The installation by ENGIE of 3GW of additional renewable capacities in 2020 is consistent with our growth strategy in carbon-free energies and positions ENGIE as one of the leaders in the development of these energies in the world.
“This is a performance given the difficult context for the sector in 2020.
“It puts us on track to achieve our objective of 9GW of additional capacity between 2019 and 2021 and, beyond, to further accelerate our pace. growth in green energies.”
