Vineyard Wind has submitted bids for its up to 1300MW Liberty Wind development in response to New York State’s second offshore wind solicitation.
The proposals comprise six options, including one that would represent the single largest direct economic benefit commitment of any offshore wind project in the US to date, Vineyard Wind said.
The proposed projects will deliver enough clean energy to power roughly 700,000 homes and businesses in New York, it said.
Liberty Wind will be located 135km east of Montauk Point.
Vineyard Wind chief executive Lars Pedersen said: “We’re pleased to bring Liberty Wind to New York policymakers and look forward to building upon the extensive community engagement that is a hallmark of our U.S offshore wind business.
“As a ‘first mover’ in offshore wind power in the US, we believe that setting positive precedents for development will lead to newer and better standards across the industry, standards that ensure local communities received the greatest possible benefits with minimal impacts.”
The recent request for proposals from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority is part of the state’s overall effort to reach 9GW of offshore wind power generation by 2035.
Vineyard Wind is a 50:50 joint venture of Iberdrola’s Avangrid Renewables and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners.
Orsted and Eversource’s Sunrise Wind 2 and Equinor’s Empire Wind 2 and Beacon Wind projects are also confirmed bidders in the process.
