MHI Vestas’ next offshore wind turbine will be a “significant step up” in size compared with the company’s current available platforms, according chief executive Philippe Kavafyan.
A spokesman for MHI Vestas confirmed comments in the local Danish press by Kavafyan that the new turbine will be much bigger in terms of both rotor size and capacity.
Kavafyan (pictured), speaking to Danish media outlet Finans, said the new turbine will be based on the same architecture as current offerings.
He told Finans that the new machine will be unveiled shortly.
“It will be a significant step up in both rotor size and capacity compared to our current platform,” he told the media outlet in an interview.
“What we can hear from customers is that it will be a competitive response.”
MHI Vestas’ current largest turbines are the V164-10.0MW and V174-9.5MW.
Rivals Siemens Gamesa and GE Renewable Energy have both already launched new next-generation hardware.
The German-Spanish manufacturer is offering a 14MW turbine to the market while the US company is promoting its 12MW Haliade-X.
Both outfits have already secured major deals for both units in a number of different markets.
