French energy giant Total has signed an agreement with Spanish company Ignis to develop about 3300MW of solar projects in Spain.
The projects, located near Madrid and in the Andalusia region, are expected to start operations in 2022 with the ambition of putting them all into production in 2025.
Remunerations will be paid by Total to Ignis as the projects develop, the French company said.
Total said the new deal follows two agreements concluded in February 2020 with Powertis and Solarbay Renewable Energy with a view to developing nearly 2GW of solar projects.
It brings the company’s portfolio of solar projects under development in Spain to more than 5GW by 2025.
Total said the solar electricity portfolio will allow the group to cover all of the electricity consumption of its industrial sites in Europe by 2025, about 6 terrawatt-hours of electricity, as well as supply its customers in Spain.
Total chief executive Patrick Pouyanne said: “This decision to invest massively in renewable electricity capacities to supply green energy to all our industrial operations in Europe provides concrete proof of our decision to move towards the decarbonisation of our European operations in line with our new climate ambition.
“It also demonstrates the value of integrating production-trading-sales in the power chain.”
