Siemens Gamesa picks hydrogen partner for Danish pilot

Siemens Gamesa wins 567MW in India

Siemens Gamesa has chosen Danish company Green Hydrogen Systems (GHS) to supply the electrolyser system for a green hydrogen project in Denmark.

The project will comprise a 3MW Siemens Gamesa wind turbine that will be coupled to a 400kW electrolyser.

The wind turbine-hydrogen plant is expected to start producing the green gas in January 2021.

Siemens Gamesa will operate the turbine in “island mode”, where instead of feeding the power grid with electricity, the electricity will be converted into hydrogen that can be stored and used at any time.

GHS will supply Siemens Gamesa with a turnkey containerised electrolyser solution, designed to accommodate the fluctuating power output of wind turbines and ensure high efficiency.

The hydrogen produced in the project will be stored for subsequent distribution and use as a fuel for hydrogen-powered buses, taxis and cars.

Siemens Gamesa power-to-x innovation manager Finn Daugaard Madsen said: “We are excited to launch this pioneering project and to have chosen GHS as our electrolysis partner.

“Their electrolyser will form a key component in the project, which we hope will lead to a very lean and cost-effective means of storing and utilising green energy from wind turbines.

Green Hydrogen Systems chief executive Niels-Arne Baden added: “Europe is really banking on sustainable energy, and green hydrogen will and must play at vital role in the coming transition.

“Siemens Gamesa, which has recently launched the world’s largest wind turbine, is an obvious leader in making wind-hydrogen production the next big power-to-x application.

“We are very proud to have been chosen as electrolysis partner for this important and visionary project.”

In a conventional wind turbine operation, the turbine is connected to the power grid, and the energy it produces must be consumed immediately or go to waste.
