MHI Vestas is to cut 148 jobs from its factories in Denmark, beginning September 2020.
The company cited a “pause in production capacity growth” as the reason for the decision.
“Due to delays in the company’s project pipeline, the growth that was anticipated in production will not materialise as expected,” MHI Vestas stated.
The latest announcement is in addition to the company’s decision in January to let go of 46 staff from its Danish operations, comprising 25 workers from the nacelle factory in Lindo and 21 from the blade facility in Nakskov, as reported by a subscriber-only issue of reNEWS.
Staff had been offered voluntary redundancy.
The 148 headcount reduction announced today will impact the PCM facility in Esbjerg as well as the Lindo and Nakskov factories.
MHI Vestas vice president and manufacturing head Claus Ungstrup said: “In the coming weeks, our focus will be to fully support our colleagues during this difficult time.
“We’ve consistently been ramping up our production capacity the last several years, and now we’re seeing a pause in that growth.
“We are confident that our manufacturing remains competitive when delivering offshore wind turbines in Europe and that Denmark-based production will continue to serve as the benchmark when adding facilities in other regions.”
MHI Vestas said it is “committed to Danish manufacturing” and confident that, with the growing ambition in European core markets, Denmark will continue to be an industrial hub for the offshore wind industry in the long-term.
At present the Lindo facility employs 470 staff and Nakskov 550 staff.
