Regen has published a 10-point plan aiming to inspire and inform local governments to play leadership roles in UK decarbonisation efforts.
The paper, sponsored by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks, sets out a programme to devolve powers and funding on energy, empowering local leaders to tackle the climate emergency.
The UK will not achieve its net zero ambition without the active engagement of the people and organisations living and working in each of the it’s nations, cities and regions, Regen said.
“Local government can and must lead a coherent, urgent, co-ordinated approach to energy system transformation. Central government must embark on a major programme to devolve power and funding on energy to the local level,” said Regen head of delivery Hazel Williams.
SSEN head of future networks Stuart Reid added: “Climate change is an international problem, that requires local solutions. It is imperative that we turn ambition, into pragmatic and deliverable action, ensuring no communities are left behind in the transition to net zero.”
The paper’s 10 points span with energy network operators on critical infrastructure, to building social permission for radical change in their communities.
