Norwegian energy company Aker BP is to explore opportunities to use offshore wind energy at new oil and gas development areas off the coast of Norway.
Aker BP said it has entered into an agreement in principle with Equinor on commercial terms for a coordinated development of the Krafla, Fulla and North of Alvheim (NOAKA) oil and gas licences on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.
The partners aim to develop NOAKA with a minimal carbon footprint.
“State-of-the-art technological solutions will be used to ensure high efficiency and low emissions,” Aker BP said.
The field will initially be powered from shore and use digital solutions in both the development and operations phase, it added.
The company said it will also evaluate the opportunity of combining this with offshore wind, which “could potentially enable power to be exported back to shore in the future” .
Plans for the development and operation of NOAKA, which is estimated to have resources of over 500 million barrels of oil equivalent, are expected to be submitted in 2022, Aker BP said.
