Enel Green Power has won a tender in Spain to integrate two new types of energy storage technology with photovoltaic plants on the Balearic island of Mallorca.
The two storage systems are currently in the development phase.
They will use solid-state lithium battery cells and vanadium redox flow technology.
Once operational, each system’s performance will be analysed to validate their operating efficiency.
The storage systems will be integrated with the Son Juny and Son Orlandis solar PV plants in Mallorca.
The battery technologies will be tested to evaluate their storage potential in real operating conditions, said Enel.
Enel said the technologies have potential to “fill the gap” of commercialised lithium ion stationary storage systems deployed today.
The technologies feature greater stability and safety in relation to flammability, lower performance degradation, even after repeated cycles of operation, and do not use critical materials such as cobalt.
