Prysmian and Twentsche Kabelfabriek (TKF) have signed final contracts with Vattenfall to supply the inter-array cables for the 1500MW Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind project, off the Netherlands.

The inter-array cables will connect the wind farm’s 140 turbines with two offshore high voltage stations.

Netherlands-based TKF will supply the inter-array cables for Hollandse Kust Zuid 1 and 2, while Prysmian will supply Hollandse Kust Zuid 3 and 4.

TKF will manufacture and deliver 150km of 66 kV aluminium core inter-array cables and accessories.

Production will take place in Lochem and Haaksbergen, in the Netherlands.

Delivery of the cables is expected in 2022.

“We look forward to working together with Vattenfall and are pleased, as a Dutch company, to contribute in this way to the sustainable energy goals in the Netherlands”, said Walter Heerts, TKF subsea business line director.

For Hollandse Kust Zuid 3 and 4, Prysmian will manufacture and supply 172 km of 66 kV XLPE-insulated inter-array cables and accessories.

Manufacturing will take place in Nordenham, Germany. Delivery is expected in 2022.

“We are proud to support Vattenfall in this important project, providing The Netherlands with CO2-free electricity. Our 66 kV inter-array cables system, compared to 33 kV, can save up to 15% in costs for offshore wind farms, thus supporting the development and growth of the offshore renewable market and its sustainable supply of energy” said Hakan Ozmen, Prysmian projects business executive vice president.

The companies were chosen through two tendering processes.

Vattenfall offshore wind head Catrin Jung said: “Hollandse Kust Zuid is a flagship project for Vattenfall and for the Dutch energy transition. We look forward to working with TKF and Prysmian, both highly experienced companies, to make this project a success.”

Vattenfall was awarded permits to develop these four sites after winning two separate tender rounds in 2018 and 2019.
