MHI Vestas has launched a new offshore wind technician apprentice programme in northeast Scotland.
Apprentices will gain classroom and practical experience over the three-year course, including on wind farms where MHI Vestas technology is deployed in the UK.
Students will receive a salary and also be appointed a mentor from MHI Vestas during the apprenticeship.
Successful candidates will be awarded a Higher National Diploma, as well as gain exposure to living offshore and learning about turbine systems and maintenance activities.
Courses will initially be based at Fraserburgh College campus, but most of the time will be spent working offshore, the company said.
Students will either live on an offshore service vessel working on a 14 days on/14 days off rotation scheme, or will be transported daily from an onshore base to a wind farm, depending on the location of the project.
They will work in teams of between two and six persons and be managed daily by the site supervisor.
Tasks will include routine checks, scheduled maintenance and troubleshooting of the electrical and mechanical systems, and component replacement.
Apprentices will also be responsible for learning electrical and mechanical operations and systems, maintenance and upgrading installation activities, and compliance with MHI Vestas health and safety management system.
They will also create follow-up work orders and order parts and register time and material consumption in A/X on MHI Vestas’ CMMS System.
