Global provider of data centre services QTS Realty Trust has signed agreements to purchase renewable energy to supply its newly acquired facility in Groningen, in the Netherlands.
The agreements are for the purchase of renewable energy via European Guarantees of Origin from electricity generated by Dutch wind farms and Nordic hydro sources. The agreements cover over 20 gigawatt hours of energy annually and account for 100% of the expected electrical load at QTS’ Groningen data centre.
The data centre, which is north-east of Amsterdam, currently has built-out capacity representing approximately 10 gross megawatts of power.
The agreement follows similar renewable energy procurements by QTS in the US, including Dallas, Chicago and Piscataway, in New Jersey.
The Groningen contract supports QTS’ commitment to procure 100% of its power from renewable energy sources globally by 2025 as documented in the company’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Initiatives Report.
QTS energy and sustainability vice president Travis Wright said: “Today’s announcement is another significant step towards our goal of procuring 100% of our power from renewable energy sources by 2025.
“Groningen is particularly important as it demonstrates our global commitment to minimizing our carbon footprint through advanced development and procurement initiatives.”
