The Australian Government is seeking feedback on a regulatory framework for offshore wind and other marine renewables.
The proposed regulatory framework will address all areas of offshore wind, from exploration, construction and operation, through to decommissioning, as well as for other offshore renewable energy technologies and associated infrastructure in Commonwealth waters.
Commonwealth waters commence beyond three nautical miles from the coast.
To gather comments the government has developed a discussion paper and process map outlining the proposed regulatory framework.
The proposal brings together the Australian Government’s experience in regulation of other sectors with best practice for offshore energy regulation overseas.
Feedback on the proposal is due by 28 February 2020. All submissions will be confidential.
Information sessions will be held in Perth and Melbourne in mid-February 2020.
The sessions will take a seminar format with opportunity for questions and answers.
Located off the south coast of Gippsland, Victoria, Australia’s first offshore wind project – the up to 2GW Star of the South – could enter construction this year if it is approved.
