EDF Renewables has contracted Helix Robotics Solutions to carry out unexploded ordnance (UXO) and boulder clearance at the site of the 450MW Neart na Gaoithe offshore wind farm off the coast of Scotland.
Helix Robotics said the work will be managed and overseen by a team based in Aberdeen, supported by specialist subcontractors from Scotland and the wider UK.
The scope covers up to three months identifying potential UXO using an XLS Work class remote operated vehicle (ROV) onboard a chartered vessel.
The second phase will involve UXO clearance and detonation utilising the same vessel and ROV, with the duration determined by number of UXOs that are found.
Phase three will cover boulder relocation using a grab tool onboard a chartered vessel over a six-month period.
Helix said it will use local ports for mobilisation, demobilisation and support services during the work.
Helix Robotics vice president for Europe and West Africa Gary Aylmer said: “This is a significant award for Helix as it represents an expansion to our current renewable offering – to better support the development of the UK’s offshore renewable energy sector.
“As a company based in Scotland, we are immensely proud to have been selected by EDF Renewables to perform the work on a Scottish offshore wind farm and look forward to working with them and the local supply chain in delivering this significant project.”
Neart na Gaoithe is being developed by EDF and Irish utility ESB, with both companies each holding a 50% stake in the project.
It will feature 54 Siemens Gamesa turbines.
Offshore construction is scheduled to start in June 2020, with the project due online in 2023.
