Vestas feeds Mainstream in Chile

Vestas has secured a turbine order for the 185MW Cerro Tigre wind project in Chile from Mainstream Renewable Power.

The order is for the supply and installation of 44 V117-4.2 MW machines and Vestas will also service the wind farm for 20 years.

The order with Vestas replaces a previous conditional turbine deal that Mainstream placed with Senvion in late 2018, for turbines totalling 340MW for the Cerro Tigre and Tchamma wind farm, also in Chile.

Cerro Tigre, located in Antofagasta, is expected to reach commercial operation in 2021. Turbine delivery is scheduled for the third quarter of 2020.

Mainstream Renewable Power Latin America general manager Manuel Tagle said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Vestas at the Cerro Tigre wind farm, which is part of our wholly-owned and fully-contracted 1.3GW Andes Renovables wind and solar generation platform in Chile.”

Vestas Latin America south cone senior sales director Andres Gismondi added: “We are very glad to have signed our first contract with Mainstream Renewable Power in Chile.

“We share a common set of values and a vision on the need to transition to renewable energies. Hopefully we will be able to benefit them greatly with the competitiveness of our 4MW platform.”

Cerro Tigre, awarded in the 2016 distribution companies tender, has already received the environmental and grid connection permits.

With this latest order, Vestas as reached a firm order intake of almost 500MW in 2019 and has surpassed a total of 1.4GW of wind capacity either installed or under construction, consolidating its 40% market share.

In the southern cone region, comprising Chile, Argentina and Uruguay, Vestas holds a 50% market share.
