The new leaders of Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) have called for a renegotiation of the country’s climate package.
SPD co-leader Norbert Walter-Borjans said today that, although the party had previously agreed the package with its grand coalition government partners led by Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union, the measures included did not go far enough to tackle climate change.
“The climate change package of the grand coalition is not enough,” he said, adding that it was also “not fair enough” or “effective enough” based on what scientists say.
Therefore, it needs to be renegotiated.
Walter-Borjans (pictured) was speaking at a party conference in Berlin where he and his new co-leader Saskia Esken had been formerly elected to head the SPD.
The agreed climate package has been criticised by German renewable energy industry groups for lacking ambition on clean power.
They have also been critical of a measure included that bans the building of wind farms closer than 1000 metres from residential areas.
