State-owned buildings and facilities in Virginia will soon be powered with solar and wind energy under a new agreement with Dominion Energy.
Dominion will supply electricity totalling 420MW from a 75MW wind farm and four solar facilities totalling 345MW.
Rocky Forge Wind is under development by Apex Clean Energy in Botetourt County and will be the first onshore wind project in Virginia when it comes online in 2021.
The solar farms are the 88MW Belcher project owned by Dominion in Louisa County, Lincoln Clean Energy’s 70MW Bedford plant in the city of Chesapeake and Open Road Renewables’s 90MW Walnut development in King and Queen County.
A fourth unnamed solar project will provide the remaining generation, Dominion said.
Virginia Governor Ralph Northam said: “My administration is committed to combating climate change and advancing the clean energy economy.
“It has been a historic month for renewable energy in the Commonwealth – with this landmark contract, we are continuing to lead by example in cutting emissions, investing in clean energy, and ensuring a healthy world for future generations.”
Dominion Energy chairman, president and chief executive Thomas Farrell said: “We share Governor Northam’s goal for a cleaner energy future here in Virginia. Working to achieve this goal is the right thing to do for our customers, for communities we serve, for employees and for our business.
“Partnerships like this one are vital to reducing carbon emissions, and we’re proud to be able to work with the Commonwealth to provide clean energy for its operations across Virginia.”
Dominion added that the agreement also represents progress toward its commitment to having 3GW of solar and wind resources in operation or under development by 2022.
