Total has begun construction of a 52MW photovoltaic plant in Japan.
Total Solar International, the utility-scale solar business of the oil and gas player, is building the solar power plant in Osato, in the Miyagi prefecture.
The facility is expected to start producing power in 2021.
Total renewables senior vice president Julien Pouget said: “The Miyagi Osato solar park is Total’s third and biggest solar plant in Japan, which will allow us to reach accumulated capacity of over 100MW in the country.”
Total’s 25MW Miyako solar park came online this year and the 27MW Nanao PV plant began operations in 2017.
“This project is in line with Total’s commitment to develop renewable production capacities worldwide and in particular in the Japanese market, where we are actively pursuing development,” Pouget added.
The PV plant is designed to fully meet Japan’s stringent earthquake-resistant building standards and will be installed with 116,000 SunPower high efficiency modules.
The plant will be operated by Miyagi Osato Solar Park, a special purpose company, majority-owned by Total Solar International (90%), alongside SB Energy (10%), a Japanese subsidiary of SoftBank Group.
