Scottish community wind developer Storas Uibhist has secured refinancing worth almost £9m for its Lochcarnan project on South Uist in the Outer Hebrides.
Lombard and the Royal Bank of Scotland have provided £8.5m to project owner Storas Uibhist for the 6.9MW wind farm, Scotland’s biggest community-owned scheme.
Storas Uibhist said the refinancing will secure the continued operation of the wind farm and facilitate future community projects.
“The wind farm not only ensures the islands have a sustainable source of electricity, it also generates income we can reinvest back into the communities of South Uist, Eriskay and Benbecula to boost the economy, protect local crofting practices and generate employment opportunities for future generations,” said chairwoman Mary Schmoller.
Royal Bank of Scotland’s Western Isles senior relationship manager Iain McFee (pictured right, with Lombard Asset Finance senior relationship manager Allan Chalmers on left) added: “Storas Uibhist is working to secure the future of these islands and the revenue generated by the windfarm is a key part of this.”
Lochcarnan, which was commissioned in 2013, consists of three Enercon E-70 2.3MW turbines.
