ALE partnered with Giant Taiwan to provide the onshore handling, transportation and storage of wind turbine foundations for phase two of the 120MW Formosa 1 offshore wind project off the coast of Taiwan.
The second phase comprises 20 Siemens Gamesa 154-6MW turbines, being installed 6km off Miaoli County in the Taiwan Strait.
The scope of the ALE and Giant joint venture included the transportation and load-out of monopiles from their point of fabrication in Rostock, Germany, the development of earthquake-resilient storage facilities at the Taiwanese Port of Taichung and the load-in of both monopiles and transition pieces at the port.
In July the first Siemens Gamesa turbine has been installed at Formosa 1, phase two, with Seajacks jack-up Zaratan carrying out turbine installation in the Taiwan Strait.
In April the project’s 20 monopile foundations left EEW’s yard in Germany on two heavy transport vessels, destined for the port of Taichung.
ALE Taiwan director Chris Schraa said: “By establishing ALE-Giant we have fast tracked our localisation and have been able to offer ALE’s world class services, safety and quality standards while being seen as a local partner from day one.”
Formosa 1 phase two is being developed by a partnership of Orsted (35%), JERA (25%), Macquarie Capital (25%) and Swancor Renewable Energy (15%).
