AMSC secures more orders from Doosan

AMSC delivers for Doosan

AMSC has won a $9m order for its 5MW-class wind turbine electrical control systems from South Korean wind turbine maker Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction.

AMSC will complete shipments of the follow-on order for the electrical control systems no later than 2020.

Initial volumes of the 5.5MW units were ordered in January 2018.

The 5.5MW full conversion wind turbine design and prototype is the product of a joint development between South Korea-based Hyundai and AMSC, which Doosan acquired in 2017.

AMSC chief executive Daniel McGahn said: “We believe that this order represents the beginning of Doosan’s transition into volume production with one of the world’s largest offshore wind turbines.

“As the South Korean wind market grows and Doosan positions itself for export, we stand ready to support its anticipated production ramp with our 5.5MW electrical control system.”

In July Doosan was awarded a global certification for its offshore wind turbine and is the the first South Korean company to receive the ‘Type Certificate’ for the 5.5MW machine, from international certification agency UL DEWI-OCC.

Type Certificates are usually issued after a comprehensive evaluation of the system’s design, performance test of both the parts and finished product, and evaluation of the related manufacturing facilities and quality management system.

According to GlobalData, the South Korean offshore wind market capacity is forecasted to grow to approximately 6GW by 2030 while global offshore wind market capacity is forecasted to grow to approximately 100GW by 2030.

AMSC’s wind turbine electrical control system includes the company’s proprietary power converters, pitch and yaw converters, SCADA systems and other power electronics.
