Projects in Scotland including battery storage, hydro and solar have secured a share of £10m finance from SP Energy Networks’ Green Economy Fund.
A total of 21 initiatives have been selected for financial backing from the fund, which was established in 2018 to support projects that will ultimately help the Scottish government reach its green targets.
One project is at the Halo in Kilmarnock that is delivering a sustainable low carbon energy system, using 100% renewables, to service businesses and the residential community.
Another called Warmworks will create a ‘virtual power plant’ in Dumfries and Galloway, by installing battery storage technology in 150 off-gas homes in the Stewartry area.
The KPT Development Trust will also receive funding to help build a hydroelectric scheme to generate power for the rural communities of Keir, Penpont and Tynron, in the southwest of Scotland.
Funding will also go to the Energy Skills Partnership for training in renewables and energy efficiency.
Other projects include electric vehicles for a variety of different purposes, including refuse collection and transporting elderly and vulnerable people.
SP Energy Networks is the distribution arm of ScottishPower.
SP Energy Networks chief executive Frank Mitchell said: “We are delighted to recognise some of Scotland’s greenest and most innovative projects by awarding them funding to further their vital work.
“Scotland has always been a nation of innovators and today we are recognising 21 incredibly innovative projects.
“We believe in supporting our communities by investing directly in projects that deliver low carbon solutions and also create the economic benefits locally that can come from driving to zero carbon.
“At SP Energy Networks, we share the Scottish government’s vision of making a cleaner, greener Scotland by accelerating our green economy in order to deliver a better future quicker for our communities.”
Energy Saving Trust, the administrator for the Green Economy Fund, group director of operations Mike Thornton said: “This latest announcement shows how the Green Economy Fund continues to provide valuable funding to projects that will have a lasting and sustainable impact on Scotland’s green economy.
