Transmission system operator TenneT has completed construction of a key section of the 623km NordLink cable that will connect the German and Norwegian electricity markets.
NordLink has been dubbed the “green cable” because it will serve as an exchange for German wind and solar power with Norwegian hydro power.
TenneT said it has successfully launched a section of the cable under the Landesschutzdeich, meaning that it had almost completed the entire 516km submarine part of NordLink.
Only a few remaining tasks still need to be performed for the submarine cable, including connecting the final cable sockets, TenneT said.
The company would now start gradually relocating the 54km underground cable section from the Busumer dike to the Wilster converter site.
NordLink will also feature 53km of overhead power lines in Norway, for which completion of construction is expected next year.
