Dairyland Power Cooperative is to source 52MW of electricity from Avangrid Renewables’ Tatanka Ridge wind farm in South Dakota.
The proposed project in Deuel County will have a total capacity of 154.8MW and will comprise 56 GE turbines.
Construction is expected to start this year, with commercial operation slated for year-end 2020.
Dairyland’s portion of Tatanka Ridge’s output would deliver enough renewable energy to power approximately 16,000 homes, the company said.
Between land lease payments and taxes, the wind farm will inject $1.7m of economic benefits annually, it added.
Dairyland vice president of strategic planning Rob Palmberg said: “Diversifying our generation mix is a key strategic priority for Dairyland and our cooperative membership.
“Tatanka Ridge will significantly increase our investment in sustainable, renewable energy.
“Dairyland has collaborated twice with Avangrid Renewables on existing wind energy projects and we are excited to work together again.”

Dairyland Power Cooperative provides wholesale electricity requirements for 24 distribution cooperatives and 17 municipal utilities.
