Battery thermometer wins EU start-up prize

EIT InnoEnergy, the European innovation engine for sustainable energy, has crowned Danubia Nanotech the winner of PowerUp!

The award also includes a €50,000 cash prize and a place on EIT InnoEnergy’s business creation programme for Danubia Nanotech’s aerial temperature monitoring technology.

The technology can extend the lifetime of batteries used in electric vehicle and energy storage applications.

The annual competition organised by EIT InnoEnergy, attracts start-ups specialising in technological innovations in the field of sustainable energy management.

The final of the PowerUp! competition, held in Krakow, Poland saw 14 finalists present their solutions and business cases to the jury and the audience at the Impact 2019 Conference.

Over 300 innovative teams from 24 countries entered the competition which began earlier this year.

In a series of regional rounds, innovators battled it out putting forward their business cases for innovations across sustainable energy, cleantech, mobility, cybersecurity and smart cities.

Danubia NanoTech presented a solution for aerial temperature monitoring in a form of a graphene temperature sensor to extend EV battery life. The sensor is available as an extremely thin film, which is applied to any non-metallic substrate.

Temperature management is key to making EVs reliable and efficient, especially during rapid EV charging as the heat created in this process must be effectively dissipated to prevent the battery cells from overheating and being damaged.

“We applied to the competition because we have been seeking a smart investor like EIT InnoEnergy that not only provides financial investment, but also supports us with business development through its network,” said Patrik Krizansky, Danubia Nanotech’s chief executive.
