German renewables player Pfalzsolar will build and operate a 21MW solar plant on the Borssele nuclear power plant site in the Netherlands.
Construction of the project will begin in the third quarter of this year.
EPZ, the operator of the Borssele nuclear power plant in the province of Zeeland, initiated a tender for the 21.5MW photovoltaic project at the end of 2018.
Pfalzsolar project development head Max Huber said: “To build a solar park in the immediate neighbourhood of a nuclear power plant was not absurd for us, but logical and reasonable.
“Otherwise, the areas would remain unused, which would be a loss from both an economic and an ecological point of view.”
The electricity that the solar park will produce is remunerated according to the Dutch SDE+ subsidy system over a period of 15 years.
EPZ is the largest electricity producer in the province of Zeeland and started investing in renewable energy in 2003.
In March this year Pfalzsolar started construction work on the 34MW Almere solar park in the province of Flevoland in the Netherlands, making it one of the country’s largest PV power plants.
The developer also plans to implement further large-scale solar roof and ground-mounted projects in the Netherlands and Luxembourg by the end of 2019.
