Dutch-German grid operator Tennet has launched a drive to ensure all of its substations support biodiversity.
The transmission system operator will roll out environmentally friendly maintenance activity at its 462 high-voltage substations in the Netherlands and Germany.

The initiative follows what Tennet has described as “spectacular results” from a pilot project at three substations in the Netherlands. Here environmentally friendly maintenance of the sites hosting high voltage electrical equipment has led to a significant increase in the local insect population.
The programme Tennet is embarking on should lead to biodiversity-friendly management being the standard by 2025.
