Swedish pulp and paper producer SCA is working with OX2 to develop up to 1000MW of new wind power on its land within five years.
Initially SCA and OX2 have identified a small number of areas that are suitable for wind power in Norrland county and have begun to develop four projects. Further sites may be considered.
SCA owns 2.6 million hectares of environmentally certified forest in northern Sweden.
SCA head of wind energy Milan Kolar said: “OX2 has huge experience with such projects, from the development stage to commissioned wind farms.
“This makes OX2 the ideal partner to further SCA’s ambition for growth in the renewable energy sector.”
OX2 project development manager Hillevi Priscar said: “OX2 and SCA complement each other and have a very flexible way of working, meaning we can make quick decisions.
“Together, we have an excellent background, in connection with other stakeholders, for the achievement of our common objectives and can contribute to the transition towards a 100% renewable energy system in Sweden.”
In 2018, there were 324 operational wind turbines on SCA’s land, equivalent to 13% of Sweden’s wind power production, with a total annual capacity of 2.6 terawatt hours (TWh).
During 2018, the company decided to build an additional 120 wind turbines.
Together, with previously agreed projects, wind power production on SCA’s land is expected to increase to 6.7TWh by 2021.
Up to 2018, OX2 has contributed to the development of around 12% of the wind power production in Sweden.
