Innogy has been given the go-ahead by UK marine authorities to increase maximum capacity at its Sofia wind farm off north-east England from 1.2GW to 1.4GW.
The Marine Management Organisation has approved the consent amendment, rubber stamping an earlier green light from BEIS Secretary Greg Clark, according to the German developer.
Officials have also given permission for turbines with rotor diameters of 288 metres, up from the previously permitted 215 metres.
The changes were part of an application, filed last year, to alter the original consent granted in 2015.
Sofia project director David Few said the planning tweaks will allow for deployment of the “latest generation of larger, more efficient and technologically advanced” turbines.
“The approval decisions are clearly excellent news and now mean that Sofia will be able to make an even bigger contribution towards achieving the UK’s carbon emission reduction targets,” he added.
The project, located in the Dogger Bank 165km from shore, will be bid into this year’s Contracts for Difference auction that is expected to start in May.
