Spam brand owner Hormel Foods has signed a virtual power purchase agreement to source 50% of its electricity needs from a 74MW wind farm in Nebraska.
The company partnered with Kinect Energy Group to deliver the deal.
Construction of the project near Milligan is expected to be complete in 2020 with output estimated at 349,000 megawatt-hours a year.
Hormel Foods director of environmental sustainability Tom Raymond said: “As a leading corporate citizen in our industry, we are inspired by projects that minimise environmental impacts and align with the interests of our customers and consumers around the world.
“This agreement supports our company’s environmental sustainability goals and is a testament to our commitment and support of renewable energy.”
Kinect Energy Group director of sustainability services Nicholas Franco said: “We were able to leverage our deep electric market experience to assess the project economics and negotiate a virtual power purchase agreement that worked perfectly for Hormel Foods.”
Hormel Foods also subscribes to community solar gardens at five manufacturing locations.
