A German environmentalist group has filed a complaint with the European Commission against Germany for allowing the construction of the 288MW Butendiek offshore wind farm.
The Berlin-based Nature And Biodiversity Conservation Union claims the project west of Sylt, along with others in the German North Sea, is causing ‘massive’ damage to bird populations.
“For the birds it would be best if Butendiek was a least partially dismantled,” said NABU federal managing director Leif Miller.
“If that is not potentially viable, then we now expect effective alternative measures,” he said, without elaborating.
Butendiek became operational in 2015 and features 80 Siemens SWT-3.6-120 turbines.
It is jointly owned by developer WPD, Marguerite Fund, Siemens Financial Services, Industriens Pension, Pensionskassernes Administration, Caisse des Depots, and Elektrizitätswerk der Stadt Zurich.
