Labour said it would create up to 50,000 new green jobs in Scotland as part of “Green Industrial Revolution” based on renewables at a party conference in Dundee.
Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell (pictured) told Scottish Labour delegates 20,000 of the additional jobs would come from an expansion of onshore wind, 15,000 from offshore wind and 15,000 via a UK-wide energy efficiency programme.
McDonnell reaffirmed an earlier Labour pledge to add a further 42GW of offshore wind capacity in the UK by 2030.
The opposition party also wants to double onshore wind capacity by 2030 to 30GW.
“At least 60% of that new (onshore wind) capacity will be here and could mean 20 thousand new jobs in Scotland,” he said.
McDonnell added: “Scotland will be at the heart of a Green Industrial Revolution in our energy sector that could save this planet.
“Scottish hydro, Scottish wind, and Scottish wave power are essential to achieving the transition to the sustainable fuel sources that we need.”
